“In a community where honor was essential and dependent on spiritual leadership of the father, Ham did not cover his father’s shame and mocked him. By acting this way, Ham diminished his father’s social authority and did not protect his honor. We should not overlook, but we must forgive and treat people preciously, even if we may rebuke their wrongdoings. Shem and Japheth covered their father’s shame with a garment. Rather than checking on his humiliation, they were more interested in covering their father’s nakedness. How do we react when we hear gossip about others? It is right attitude for us as Christians to concern for their honor and soul, rather than to eager to confirm the gossip with curiosity. ‘Help us, O God, not to fall into this world’s ways and be lazy in walking with you.’”
