섬김, 섬긴다. 이 단어의 통용되는 정의는 ‘필요를 헤아려 채운다’ 이다. 옳다. 맞는 말이다. 허나 유의할 것이 있다. 필요와 요구는 동의어가 아니라는 점이다. 덕을 세우지 않는 충족은 섬김이 아니다. 그것은 되레 관계의 질서를 해하고 성화의 여정을 오도한다. 그렇다면 섬김은 어떠해야 할까. 섬김과 세움은 어찌해야 공존할 수 있나. 부모와 자녀, 스승과 제자, 상사와 부하를 벗어나 섬김은 훈육의 옷을 입기 어렵다. 본이 되는 길 외에 방법이 없다. 자발적 순복만이 해답이다.이를 가능케 하는 유일한 방도가 섬김 아닌가.
Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.(James 3:13-18 ESV)
