“요즘 ‘트라우마’라는 말을 쉽게 쓰는데, 사실 이는 10년 전까지만 해도 전문가들이나 쓰는 용어였다. 초창기만 해도 트라우마는 ‘사람이 살아가면서 통상적으로 만나기 어려운 압도적인 경험’이라 정의되곤 했다. 트라우마 연구의 중요한 계기가 된 것이 베트남전 참전 군인과 성폭력 피해자들이다. 당시 의사 입장에서는 이들이 겪은 경험이 매우 예외적으로 여겨졌을 것이다. 트라우마의 특징은 네 가지, △강렬한 두려움 △무력감 △통제의 상실 △자기 붕괴의 위협이다.”(김천석)
