“근대 일본에는 윤리학이 존재하지 않는다. 경험과학으로서의 윤리학은 물론 윤리의 이론이라는 의미에서의 윤리학도 거의 없다. 존재하는 것은 동서양 여러 국가의 윤리학설 — 그것들은 각각의 사회적 현실 속에 제도로서 살아있는 여러 규범의 관계들을 객관화하고, 거기에 있는 체계적 관련을 추상화한 것이지만 — 에 대한 소개 또는 발췌이거나, 그렇지 않으면 그들의 추상화된 학설을 자의적으로 수용해 조합한 ‘국민윤리’의 교설에 지나지 않는다. 이미 잘 알려져 있듯이 일본은 도덕주의 국가임에도 오히려 그렇기 때문에 윤리학이 존재하지 않는다. 여기서 도덕이란 사람을 대하는 태도를 의미할 뿐이다.”(藤田省三)
