Hammurabi’s Code, written several hundred years before Moses, favored the elite. If an upper-class man blinded the eye of another aristocrat, he paid with the loss of one of his eyes. But if he did the same to a commoner, he compensated the injured man only with one mina(about a pound) of silver.
