“400점 만점인 수능의 측정 오차는 ±10점 정도 된다는 것이 전문가들 설명이다. 380점이나 390점이나 실력에선 차이 없다는 것이다. 그런데도 수능 1~2점에 학생들 운명이 달라지는 것이 현행 입시 시스템이다. … 전문가 상당수가 수능을 대학 공부에 필요한 최소한의 능력만 테스트하는 자격고사(資格考査)로 바꾸자고 주장하고 있다. 그런 다음 대학들이 수능을 참조하면서 생활기록부와 논술·면접을 통해 자기들이 원하는 소질과 장기를 갖춘 아이들을 뽑게 해야 맞다는 것이다. 그러자면 대학들부터 신입생 선발에 더 많은 투자를 해야 한다. 미국 UC버클리는 1년 내내 전형 업무만 맡는 입학사정관을 100명 넘게 두고 있다. 사정관들은 우수 학생을 유치하겠다고 한국의 고교에도 찾아온다. 입시에 그 정도 공을 들이니 수험생들이 어떤 환경에서 어떻게 자라왔는지, 같은 점수라도 누가 더 발전 가능성이 있는지를 가려낼 수 있다. 우리 대학들처럼 국가가 대신 치러주는 수능에 의존하면서 돈 안 들이고 공짜로 신입생을 뽑는 방법으로는 수험생의 심층적 자질을 판별하기 어렵다.”
