“2012년 10월에 샌프란시스코에서 쳇 팔리가 전차에 치여 사망하고 기관사 대프니 존스가 전차의 방향을 틀어 쳇을 죽게 한 혐의로 기소되어 구형을 앞둔 상황이 출발점이다. 검찰 측에서는 이 사건을 한 대학병원의 외과의사였던 로드니 메이프스 박사가 교통사고 부상자들을 처리하는 과정에서 경상을 입은 한 남자의 장기를 모두 적출해 중상을 입은 환자 다섯 명의 목숨을 살린 사건과 같은 사건으로 간주한다. 메이프스 박사가 누구를 살리고 누구를 죽일지 결정할 권한을 갖지 못하는 것처럼 기관사 존스도 고의로 방향을 바꾸어 신처럼 행동할 권리가 없다는 것이다. 이에 대해 변호인은 존스가 처했던 상황을, 2003년에 전차의 기관사가 갑자기 의식을 잃고 쓰러지는 바람에 역시나 전차가 계속 달리게 놔두어 다섯 명을 치이게 하거나 선로를 틀어서 한 명을 죽게 해야 했던 클래라 머피의 경우와 비교한다. 당시 배심원단은 다수가 머피의 행위가 도덕적으로 정당하다고 판단했다. … ‘전차 문제’가 ‘존스 사건’으로 불릴 때 어떤 문제가 벌어지는지 살펴보는 것은 문학이란 무엇인가를 다시 생각해보는 기회를 제공한다.”(이현우)

But you have rejected us and disgraced us and have not gone out with our armies. You have made us turn back from the foe, and those who hate us have gotten spoil. You have made us like sheep for slaughter and have scattered us among the nations. You have sold your people for a trifle, demanding no high price for them. You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us. You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face at the sound of the taunter and reviler, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger. All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten you, and we have not been false to your covenant. Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps departed from your way; yet you have broken us in the place of jackals and covered us with the shadow of death. If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart. Yet for your sake we are killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered. Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever! Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression? For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the ground. Rise up; come to our help! Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love!

1Peter 5:6-11 ESV

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
