“남성 제자들이 눈엣가시이던 막달라 마리아를 제거하는 방법은 교활하면서도 손쉬웠다. 그가 ‘창녀 출신’이라는 이야기를 만들어낸 것이다. 성서 어디에도 근거가 없음에도 기독교 전통에서 마리아는 내내 창녀였다. 로마 가톨릭이 마리아를 ‘사도 중의 사도’라 인정한 건 1988년이다.”

“한탄은 나를 상황에 매몰시키고 개탄은 나를 상황에서 분리시키기 때문이다.”

베버는 “동·서양 문화의 차이를 종교의 교리에서” 찾아 “동양의 종교는 스스로 신이 될 수 있는 ‘신의 그릇(bowl of god)’의 종교이고, 서양의 종교는 신의 말씀대로 살고자 하는 ‘신의 도구(tool of god)’의 종교”라 하였다.

독일의 사회학자 막스 베버의 묘비에는 “우리는 그에 필적할 만한 사람을 다시는 만날 수 없을 것이다(Wir finden nimmer seines Gleichens)”라는 묘비명이 적혀 있다.

직업 수행이 강압적인 쇠우리에서 노동의 해방을 향유하는 자유의 나라로 이행하지 못한 군상
