이러지도 저러지도 못해, 아무것도 할 수 없는 정신상태. 미국에서 활동한 영국 태생의 문화인류학자 그레고리 베이트슨(Gregory Bateson, 1904∼1980)이 1950년대에 조현증에 관해 제시한 이론. 예컨대 어머니가 아이에 대해서 무언가를 하도록 말하고, 동시에 그것을 부정하는 듯한 몸짓을 한다. 그러면 아이는 이중으로 구속된 상태가 되어 아무것도 할 수 없게 된다. 베이트슨은 발리섬 사례를 토대로 어머니와 아이 사이에서는 아버지가 없을 때 이 상태가 생기기 쉽다는 것을 지적하고 있다. 아버지의 권위가 약해지거나 아버지가 없는 현대의 가족상황을 예견한 이론으로 평가받고 있다.
